Thursdays....
Jun. 23rd, 2005 09:37 pm....are better than Tuesdays, on the whole. Much closer to Fridays, for a start.
Yesterday was Wed, of course - "Lost" and Sawyer was looking mighty fine, esp in the bit where he was having words over the campfire with Kate. Half-light does wonders for a man... some would say how true for any man and that's as maybe, but sexy men just look better and better. *Sigh*
Having a great time RP'ing with Panther. Quite different from that cheeky "tart" Sparrow. *Pokes tongue at Sparrow*. (You know I still love ya!)
Thinking about NZ Birds of Prey. Looked up a great site, http://wingspan.co.nz - had all 3 we currently have:
1/ NZ Falcon (Karearea - pronounce this Ka-re-a-re-a)
2/ Australasian Harrier (Kahu - pronounce this Ka-hu)
3/ Morepork (Ruru - pronounce as sounds) this is a little owl, has a call like "More pork" hence the name.
So, when I was seeing birds of prey a couple of weeks back, they were most likely harriers, out looking for carrion (Sorry, Hawk). Plenty of road-kill here. Falcons tend to be South Islanders, and Moreporks don't come out in the day. Actually we get one near our house some nights, the call is wondrous!
We also had the now extinct birds:
1/ Hasst Eagle (Pouakai - pronounced Pow-a-ki) The largest Eagle in the world, ever!
2/ Laughing Owl
3/ Eyles Harrier
I didn't get much further, but that is the biology lesson for today, for all you Eagle's Nest gals who have become interested in Birds of Prey. There are some good pics there too, but I didn't go into them all. Check it out if you want...or not. Maybe some pics you can put in your icons, who knows?
And, from me, it's goodnight! Sleep tight, or have a day filled with boxes of chocolates, if you're just starting out! *salutes*

Date: 2005-06-23 10:28 am (UTC)Good to know you have some of the birds. We (allegedly) have quite a few of them, when I looked it up. Only ever seen a Kestrel wild, the rest have been at zoos or at shows. Knew someone who had a falcon though, used to talk to it when I was at his house.
